How Can NBFCs Automate EMI Reminder Calls in Regional Languages?
Short answer: an NBFC can automate EMI reminders by uploading the list of borrowers due, writing one call script with each borrower's name, amount and due date filled in from the sheet, and letting an AI voice agent call every borrower in their own language. The agent answers questions, notes a promise to pay or a request to call back, and follows up on WhatsApp — and a person takes over when the conversation needs one.
Why regional language matters for EMI reminders
A reminder only works if the borrower understands it and feels comfortable replying. For many borrowers outside the metros, that means Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali or another regional language — not English, and not a robotic recorded message. An AI voice agent can hold a real two-way conversation in all 22 scheduled Indian languages, including Hinglish code-switching.
How it works, step by step
- Upload the borrowers due. A spreadsheet with name, phone number, language, EMI amount and due date. Each column can be used in the call.
- Write one script. The opening line and the agent's instructions are filled in per borrower — "Namaste Ramesh ji, your EMI is due on the 15th" — so every call sounds personal.
- Set the calling window. Outbound calls are time-boxed to 9am–9pm IST, and you can narrow the window further — RBI's Fair Practices Code limits recovery calls to between 8am and 7pm, so set the campaign inside both. You can also skip weekends and holidays.
- Let the agent call. It confirms the due date, answers questions from your knowledge base (how to pay, what happens if it is late), and records the outcome: will pay, already paid, needs time, call back later, or wrong number.
- Follow up on WhatsApp. Send the payment details as an approved WhatsApp template to borrowers who asked for them.
- Hand over the hard ones. A borrower in distress, or one disputing the amount, can be transferred to a person on your team.
What happens when the borrower doesn't pick up
- Smart retry: a busy line is retried in minutes, an unanswered one after an hour or more. Someone who actively declined, or a dead number, is never re-dialled.
- Voicemail: the agent can detect voicemail and leave a short message instead of talking to a machine (on Plivo and ThinnestAI numbers).
- Call me later: "call me after five" becomes a scheduled callback that respects your calling hours.
Staying on the right side of the rules
- Keep calls inside permitted hours (see step 3).
- Keep a do-not-contact list — anyone on it is never called again.
- Write the greeting so the borrower knows who is calling and why. The agent does not announce itself automatically; that is up to the script you write.
- Every call has a transcript and an outcome; recording is a switch you turn on per agent.
What you need to start
An Indian phone number (buy one in the console, or import your own Plivo, Twilio or Telnyx number), the borrower list, and the script. See the NBFC collections and debt collections pages for full call flows, and voice campaigns for how outbound calling works.
