How Do You Get the Green Tick (Verified Business) on WhatsApp?
Short answer: the badge comes with Meta's official business account status, which you request for a number on the WhatsApp Business API. Meta's published criteria are: follow its messaging policy, be registered on the platform for at least 30 days, complete business verification, turn on two-step verification for the number, and have an approved display name. Meeting them makes you eligible, not approved. Meta decides, and publishes no review time.
What is the green tick, officially?
Meta's term is an official business account: in its words, "a business phone number owned by a business that has been verified as an authentic business". People still call the badge the green tick, though its look has changed over the years. Everything below comes from Meta's official business accounts page, read on 24 October 2026.
What are Meta's criteria?
| Criterion | How to meet it |
|---|---|
| Comply with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy | Opt-in for everyone you message, honour stop requests, offer a route to a person |
| Registered on the platform for at least 30 days | Time. A number connected last week is not eligible yet |
| Business portfolio verified | Complete business verification in Meta Business Suite with your legal name and documents |
| Two-step verification on the number | Set a six-digit PIN for the number |
| Display name approved | A name that matches your business, approved by Meta |
Older versions of Meta's documentation also asked for a notable, well-known brand. The current page does not list it, but the request form asks for supporting links such as press coverage, so expect public recognition to matter.
Who cannot get it?
Meta says it does not grant the status to business employees, test accounts, or WhatsApp Business app numbers. If you are on the free app, you need the API first; see the app versus the API.
How do you request it?
- Check the five criteria for the specific number. The status is per phone number, not per company.
- Strengthen the evidence. A website that shows the same name as your display name, and independent coverage of your business, make the case easier to accept.
- Submit the request. Meta documents the request in WhatsApp Manager: open the number, then Profile, then Official business account, then Submit request. Meta asks for details such as your website, main country and language, and supporting links.
- Wait for the notification. Meta tells you when the review is done. It states no timeframe.
Which criteria do businesses most often miss?
- The 30 days. The clock starts when the number is registered on the platform, not when your company was founded or when you used the WhatsApp Business app.
- Two-step verification. It is easy to skip during sign-up, and the request cannot go through without it.
- A display name that is approved but does not match. If the display name, your website and your verified legal name tell three different stories, fix that before applying.
- Business verification on a different portfolio. The portfolio that owns the number must be the verified one.
What if Meta says no?
Meta says you can submit a new request after 30 days. Use the time to improve what was weak: usually notability, or a display name and website that do not clearly match. Resubmitting the same request unchanged is unlikely to help.
What changes once you have it, and what does not?
- It changes trust. Customers see the badge next to your name, which helps when people worry about impersonation.
- It does not unlock features. The API, templates, broadcasts and AI replies all work without it.
- It does not raise your messaging limits or lower Meta's prices.
- It makes name changes harder. Meta says numbers with official business account status must contact Meta support to change their display name, so settle your name first.
Why you should not believe a guaranteed date
The decision is Meta's alone, made on Meta's timetable, and Meta publishes neither a timeframe nor a guarantee. Any provider promising the tick by a date, or selling it as a paid add-on, is promising something it does not control. Treat that as a warning sign.
How ThinnestAI helps
In the ThinnestAI console, the number's page reads the five checks live from Meta each time you open it and shows which ones you meet, so you know when you are ready to apply. You set the two-step verification PIN and request display name changes from the console too. The request itself is submitted to Meta, which reviews it. Nothing else depends on the badge: your agent, templates and broadcasts work from the day you connect. Start on the WhatsApp Business API page.
